Social Studies Teacher

Dan Nelson

Hello, I am proud to teach social studies at New Heights School. I am in my eleventh year here at school.  It seems like yesterday that I had just begun teaching here but we know time flies when we are having fun!

Since teaching here, I have learned a great deal about the students, the community, and myself. I feel very fortunate to teach in a community that supports our efforts to give all students a chance to succeed in their educational endeavors.

Education:

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where I majored in Secondary Education/Broad Field Social Studies and History. I have recently earned a Master of Education Degree in Principal licensure from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and am currently working on a certificate for Alternative Education from there as well.  I foresee more educational schooling to work toward the advancement of the educational process.  I am interested in how students learn most effectively and how we as educators can connect with all students in the educational process.

Teaching Background:

I have been in a classroom since 1998. I have taught at private, public and of course here at New Heights Charter School.  I have enjoyed the varied aspects of each program and have come to feel no one program fits every student and students have needs that are not always the same as every other school.  I believe schools are heading toward a more tailored educational experience for the individual and not use the same blueprint for every child.

Interests:

My first love is that of my family.  I am married with three children. My second love is that of history & teaching. My third interest is Elvis Presley but some people would say that is my second interest. I enjoy motorcycling down long and winding roads.  I also really enjoy classic cars and the history of the automobile. Another subject I enjoy is a general fascination of history itself especially World War II. I like to read in my spare time and enjoy television shows on remodeling homes.  I love the sports teams from Minnesota, Vikings, Twins, and Wild. My educational interest is in finding better ways to educate students. My favorite book is “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”.  I have many favorite movies but if I had to pick one it would be “Saving Private Ryan” but “The Road Warrior” is a close second.
