Guidance Counselor
I joined the staff mid year during the 1996-97 school year and I couldn’t be happier. I taught woodworking skills to all levels from kindergarten to seniors. The wood shop was a safe place where everyone could literally see the results of their work regardless of their skill level. It was an awesome break from the rigors of classroom academics. I rarely had more than twelve students at a time and even had grandparents assist in the lower grades! As the No Child Left Behind legislation phased in my time was spent more on assessments than teaching woodworking. My last year teaching woodworking was during the 2009-10 school year.
As a licensed guidance counselor I am privileged to work with students, parents and staff in many ways. Please refer to my Guidance page for details. I usually update this site weekly as we have students attending college while working here at New Heights in the PSEO program as well as students making up credits in summer recovery. I have many other sites and contacts definitely worth checking out! I am also an active school board member since 1998. I have held the positions of treasure, secretary, vice-president and president. During the summers you will probably find me sanding the wood floors, upgrading the wiring, moving a wall, adding new lights or repairing the ceilings.

I am an active community member and believe that volunteering in my community keeps it vibrant and attractive for both current and new residences. I admit to a passion for construction and remodeling as many family and friends will attest. I seem to be always detouring past construction sites when walking, riding bike or traveling by car.
Education
MSE University of Wisconsin River Falls, BA Mankato State University, AA Century College, AA St. Paul Technical College, numerous training certificates including Hazelton Chemical Dependency, Management & Diversity Training.
Family
I am a middle child of eight. I have six brothers and one sister. My memory of my childhood was a very happy one with a lot of teasing and rough housing. My parents were happily married and both lived to the age of 92. After six years of college I worked five years as a guidance counselor and psychology teacher in a small southeastern Minnesota town of Preston. I returned to college and attend Cabinetmaking classes at Saint Paul Technical College where I met and married my wife Joan. As our final project we built our kitchen cabinets. Soon after my wife and I set up a Cabinetmaking business in the lower town area of St. Paul. I designed and drafted all blue prints for approval, and physically constructed our home (along with family, friends and of course Joan) which has seen may renovations through the years. I am currently remodeling our kitchen so it opens up to the dining room! We have three grown children and three grandchildren.
